About Astute Safety Mentors
Jim Neilson founded Astute Safety Mentors to bring decades of frontline safety leadership ( earned in one of Australia’s highest-risk industrial environments), to the construction and industrial businesses that need it most.
In short: Jim Neilson spent 40+ years at BlueScope Steel’s Port Kembla Works, rising from metallurgy trainee to operations manager. His teams achieved over 7 years without a lost-time injury and contributed to 7 million LTI-free hours and was recognised as BlueScope’s Best Performing Group. Today he mentors NSW leaders to build safety systems that actually work.

Jim’s approach to safety has always been about people first, paperwork second, and that’s exactly what he brings to the stage.
He’s spoken at industry events including a frontline leadership conference in New Zealand, and has run leadership sessions for the Australian Safety Institute’s Canberra and Wollongong branches, where he shared the same lived, on-the-tools experience that shapes his consulting work.
“You were engaging, heart-felt, thought provoking and absolutely relevant and on-message… I know you got us all thinking about our own roles as safety leaders and which of the conversations we would rather be having.”

If you’re looking for a speaker who’s led real teams through real risk (not just presented theory), get in touch.
Jim Neilson started his career as a metallurgy trainee at BlueScope Steel’s Port Kembla Works, which is one of the highest-risk industrial environments in the country. Over four decades he worked his way up through shift foreman to operations manager, running crews across coke ovens, blast furnace, steelmaking and finishing operations.
Early in that career, Jim witnessed a workplace fatality. It shaped a lifelong commitment to safety that has never been about ticking boxes, and everything about protecting the people who turn up to work every day.
By the time Jim left the steelworks, his section had achieved over seven years without a lost-time injury, and his wider group had contributed to more than 7 million lost-time-injury-free hours and was recognised internally as BlueScope’s Best Performing Group.
After 40 years inside a large operation, Jim saw the same pattern on smaller sites right across NSW, which was folders of paperwork that looked compliant on paper but broke down the moment a supervisor was under pressure, or a subbie was in a hurry, or an auditor started asking harder questions.
Astute Safety Mentors exists to close that gap. Jim brings grassroots-to-leadership experience to construction, industrial and multi-site businesses that need safety systems built by someone who’s actually run a crew, not just written a policy.
The work is deliberately hands-on: site audits, SWMS, ISO accreditation pathways, and the coaching and mentoring that makes those systems stick when no one’s watching.
A career built on the shop floor before it moved into consulting, because a safety system only works when the people writing it have lived the risk.
Metallurgy Trainee, BlueScope Steel, Port Kembla
Started on the floor of one of Australia’s highest-risk industrial environments. A workplace fatality in these early years reshaped how Jim would think about safety for the rest of his career.
Shift Foreman, then Superintendent
Moved into hands-on leadership of production crews… the level where safety behaviour is either enforced or quietly ignored. Learned that systems on paper mean nothing without a supervisor who genuinely owns them.
Operations Manager, Port Kembla Works
Responsible for large-scale operations with significant regulatory exposure. Led his section to over 7 years with no lost-time injuries and contributed to more than 7 million LTI-free hours across the wider group, recognised as BlueScope’s Best Performing Group.
Founder & Principal Consultant, Astute Safety Mentors
Now working with construction, industrial and multi-site businesses across Sydney, the Illawarra and the Central Coast, coaching leaders and building WHS systems that are practical, defensible, and actually followed on the ground.
Astute Safety Mentors was built on a few non-negotiables… the same ones that shaped Jim’s four decades on the tools.
Lived experience over credentials
Jim isn’t a graduate with a certificate and no runs on the board. Every recommendation is grounded in 40+ years of actually running crews and managing real regulatory pressure.
Practical and compliant
Most consultants know the paperwork or the shop floor. Jim knows both, so your systems are defensible under audit and usable by the crew who actually has to follow them.
Mentoring, not tick-box compliance
Systems only work if people follow them. Jim coaches leaders and supervisors to change behaviour, so your safety culture holds up long after the folder gets filed.
Direct access to Jim
No account managers, no hand-offs to junior staff. From the first conversation to the final sign-off, you’re working with Jim, not a call centre.
Long-term, not one-and-done
A one-off audit doesn’t fix safety culture. Jim works alongside your team over time (inspections, refreshers, coaching), so improvements actually compound.
Compliance that opens doors
ISO accreditation isn’t just a certificate on the wall. Done properly, it unlocks contracts and tenders your business currently can’t compete for.
Jim’s practical experience is backed by formal WHS qualifications and appropriate insurances, but it’s his decades of lived experience that makes him stand out from many other safety consultants.
“You were engaging, heart-felt, thought provoking and absolutely relevant and on-message. You could have heard a pin drop and I know you got us all thinking about our own roles as safety leaders and which of the conversations we would rather be having. I have heard some great feedback from our teams and I think they really appreciated the ability to take some time out of their busy working lives and think about safety through some different lenses.”

“With age comes many learnings, some by doing the wrong things taking shortcuts and some by doing the right things following systematic approaches to reach desired manufacturing outcomes.
If your business needs guidance then I thoroughly recommend you seek Jim’s input. Not only can he help with a Safety mindset, he can advise on manufacturing excellence. Jim has been there, done that, and has many T-Shirts to prove it.”
